Although technology has caused our challenges to be on a broader scale they still represent the same issues that have been faced for years regarding confidence in leadership and how to foster leadership. While in battle Henry V gave his soldiers the freedom of choice to fight with him or if they had the desire to leave, they could. He would not consider them deserters. By doing this he won loyalty and devotion from his men. Henry used rhetoric skill to achieve this result. He did not want his men to leave due to his small army size but he made his men believe the small army size was more desirable. This type of rhetoric is unquestionably invaluable in the leadership role. As Gardner stated, Effective leaders heighten motivation and confidence-if diminished leaders have a hard time leading (p. Xv) The film ,Henry V, clearly show leadership development, has gutsy leadership, and shows the five exemplary practices of leadership. A leader needs to carry trust and credibility if he wants his followers to believe in him. Henry showed doodling the way by his behavior throughout the movie. Souses and Posses wrote, Model the way is when titles are granted but your behavior is what wins you respect. Be a good example-live what you say. People follow first the person, then the plan (p. 14). An example of how Henry V stood by his rules and consistency is when Parabola was to be hung for stealing. He remained strong to his values and had his friend hung. You could see by Henrys face this was painful for him but he wanted his men to see they could trust him to stand behind the principles set forth. In Leadership Engine Itchy mentions the need for edge. The king shows his edge by his decision. This example can be used in any workplace. When a manager is friends with an employee they could easily allow that employee to perform at a lower level and still be given the same high performance review that another employee who excels Is given. If other employees see this they would not trust that manager and then would not respect or follow that mangers lead. A manager needs to lead by example. The friend would need to be evaluated fairly and if necessary, let go. Current leaders must have their rules consistently applied for them to be credible ND see their visions realized. Henrys speech at Saint Crispin inspired vision to his followers. This follows Souses and Posers theory of inspiring vision. They wrote that dreams or vision Is the force that invents the future. Leaders have a desire to make something happen. Leaders have to enlist others In a common villous(p. 14). Leaders must see the big picture to have a vision of the future. A true leader wants to share the vision, not be self servant for their own goals. They must look at the good of the whole organization. Blanchard and Bowels wrote in Gung Ho-Gift of the Goose. This is cheering each other on. Wild geese fly thousands of miles each year and they do It by cheering on another every Inch of the way, honking encouragement. All leaders could learn a lot from this analogy. A leader cannot achieve great outcomes alone. It takes a team AT Delivers. A leader must provoke a goal Ana mission. Henry V used rhetoric in his Saint Crispin speech when he motivated his soldiers by appealing to their sense of honor. He states, They have come so far, how they can turn back now? His men, although feeling despair believed they needed to intention the fight because it is what was right to do and they believed it. In a work place great leaders have to make sure their employees know the goal. The leaders must practice good communication, they must make their employees feel like they are part of the team. Leaders and their followers need to look at the future and imagine things that can be and how to achieve them. One cannot continually look in the review mirror. If one spends so much time ruminating in the past they will never be able to prepare for the future. Many people will see the glass as half empty instead of half full. These people will find excuses and problems where others may find learning experiences. A comment I read once said that, The present is but an instant that separates yesterday from tomorrow. A leader needs to provide the focus of the direction they are heading, the goal that is set. A leader does not have to be born as a leader. Leaders can develop anytime in their lifetime. To become a leader one must be able to create a lasting influence in the minds of people and make them believe that whatever the leader is doing is for their benefit. Being a good manager does not make one a good leader. It has been said that managers deal in efficiency and leaders in effectiveness. A manager is happy that the work place is going smoothly. A leader wants things to change for the better. Henry the V was not born a leader. He developed his leadership over time. He learned leadership was about the we and us not the l. In his speech at Saint Crispin he constantly referred to we, us, our. Never Just himself. This is a sign oaf true leader. Leaders must be enablers to those followers around them. An example of this is when Henry V allowed York to lead the battle. He had faith in his ability to perform his feat. This is also an example that leadership can be displayed at all levels not just the top. In any organization leadership can be shared by many. Scheme (1992) wrote,the most salient aspect of future leadership will be that the desirable characteristics will not be present in a few people all the time, but rather will be present in many people some of the time. Souses and Posses wrote about a statement of Larry Boswell, CEO of Honeywell. Boswell answered to the question how one doing as a leader with is, How am I doing as a leader? The answer is how are the people you lead doing? (p. 1) A great leader will have the desire to make a difference. They will use their power to make that difference. Everyone has a natural attraction to power. One must remember that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Power can play into the human weakness. A great leader will not abuse their power. Although Henry V was a great leader his ego used his power to put his men a great risk continuing the war when they had so fewer men than the French. The fact that his men had such faith in his leadership they fought with such confidence they were able to win the battle. Any company can have this same type of environment. A leader can make their followers feel the desire to make certain choices that are not favorable to the mission and vision of their company. Even though the choices are not in line with the organizations mission positive outcomes can still be accomplished. How Organisations Use ICT Essay The Northampton Academy is a new comprehensive school situated on the Billing Brook Road in Lings. There are 1300 students attending this school with the age range of these varying from 11-18 years. Northampton Academy Many business organisations use ICT in different ways depending on the type of organisation and how ICT can improve and help the business. The Northampton Academy is good example of a business that uses ICT in administration, in a more advanced and wider range of ways. The Academy needs to be able to send out letters to parents providing information such as how well their child is doing in school, whether or not their child is displaying the right kinds of behaviour in school, or information on educational trips coming up which their child may be interested in or is a part of. Newsletters also need to be sent out providing the parents of each and every child in the Academy with information about forthcoming events, plans for the future and general information such as school term dates. The variety of ways in which they use ICT in administration, are those such as at times like registration. The register will be taken by the teacher and each student marked present or absent, and then the register will be taken to reception where the staff will then feed it through an OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) machine. This saves time and effort of those that would otherwise have to type in the information of every student, saying whether or not they are present at school that day, so that each pupils attendance is recorded on their systems. With this information the computers will be able to work out each pupils percentage of attendance to put on individual records and also to enable them to keep on top of truancy and report attendance levels to parents. The school has to keep a record of every pupils data on their databases which is all done through ICT and typed into the databases on their computers. These need to be able to be updated if a student has a change of address or a slight change of information. The contact details can be stored easily and found easily which means it is a lot quicker to search for information on each student. It is important for the information to be retrievable quickly because if a child is ill or is in urgent need of going home, then telephone numbers and emergency contact information on that student needs to be found as quickly as possible and the staff dont have the time to be searching through paper files looking for that students information. Some of the information on each pupil is needed to be kept confidential, and because it is all recorded through computers, rather than having to be written out and stored in filing systems, which would take up much more room and time searching for information, it is easier to allow for that to happen. Each member of staff can be put at different levels of access on the administration system and password protection can be enabled to individual records so that only the people that need access to those files can retrieve the information. Student and staff timetabling is arranged through ICT. They are produced through the software SIMs (Schools information management System). The computers store all the information about what year, ability level and lessons each pupil should be placed into and timetables for each and every student can be made. There has to be a teacher present at each lesson so teacher timetabling is also sorted through ICT. This way if there are errors made on an individuals timetable or there is a mix-up somewhere, it doesnt take long to correct it on the systems and re-print another one for the student or the member of staff. Using the software on the computers, things such as sending out newsletters, sending letters home to parents and general word processing becomes a lot quicker and easier. They can be made professional by applying letterheads to each letter they send, and addresses can be mail merged to save time in having to find out names and addresses in manual filing systems. Every so often, each child is issued with a report that informs their parents about how they are doing in school and monitors their academic learning. Instead of each teacher writing every pupils report out by hand, the report is typed out which saves a lot of time. There are templates that teachers can use which, again, saves time in typing out a different report for each and every individual, when sometimes that isnt always necessary. This is all carried out through the use of ICT which is very useful, especially when reports are sent out to every student on a regular basis. Another beneficial way of using ICT in The Northampton Academy is carried out in the finance office. The financial department uses Microsoft Excel software to store information on every area of finance. This programme allows the use of formulae which automatically calculates and updates the changes made in finance so that they can keep track of how much money they are spending. Microsoft Excel provides great benefit to the school when it comes to financing because of this use of formulae. If you need to change a figure, then the spreadsheet recalculates everything again for you, saving a lot of time. The school has a budget which the finance office has to keep track of and make sure they keep to it and not over-spend. To do this each department is allocated a certain amount of money that they can spend over a given amount of time, which they can use to buy resources or other equipment they need in their department area. Another important area the finance office deals with is staff wages. On their systems they keep track of how much each member of staff is being paid, when they need to be paid, and it will update all that information on the spreadsheets whenever a member of staff gets given a pay-rise or any changes are made to their pay. The financial department deals with making sure every member of staff gets paid the correct amounts when they are due for their next pay. The school provide a various number of different educational trips that take place over the school year. The finance office has to keep a system that shows them how much money each pupil has paid and for which trip, and how much more they need to pay. So that the pupil is aware of this also, the financial department issues each individual with a receipt. This information is stored on spreadsheets and every time the pupil pays in a sum of money it is changed on their spreadsheets and totals are automatically updated. The hardware used throughout The Northampton Academy varies depending on whether youre part of the administration team or a pupil at the Academy. This will depend on the workstation used. The station used by the administration team is a Dell OptiPlex GX1. This includes: * 15 or 17 CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor. These are big and bulky and take up more space. The administration staff have more room on their desks in general, because the desk only needs to cater for a single person, so they can manage with having a bigger monitor on their desk. * CPU (Central Processing Unit) * Mouse * Keyboard * Intel Pentium 2 or 3 processor * 265Mb RAM * CD Drive * Windows 2000 The station used by the pupils at the Academy is a Dell OptiPlex GX270. This includes: * 15 TFT (Thin Film Transistor) monitor. These are flat screens, which are small and compact. The students use these monitors because they need more working space on the computer desks as they dont get a desk to themselves, individually. This way more computers and more students can fit into the classroom. * CPU (Central Processing Unit) * Mouse * Keyboard * Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 2.6Ghz * 40Gb Hard Disk Drive * CD Drive * Windows XP Pro The workstations used by the administration team arent as quick and efficient as the ones used by the students. The Dell OptiPlex GX1 has all the hardware needed and is suitable for the needs of those in administration. The workstations used by the pupils have a faster running time with it running at 2.6 GHz. The memory of the computer is larger, to store all the work completed by students. The reasoning behind the students using 15 TFT monitors is so that space in the classroom is used more efficiently and so more students and more monitors can fit into the classroom. This applies to the tower box also. They are small and placed under the computer desk so that the only things on the desk itself are the monitor, the mouse and the keyboard. This allows space on the desk for students to have other things out and have more room in front of them. Each computer has a mouse and a keyboard. These arent cordless, because it avoids the trouble caused if they were misplaced, lost or perhaps, in an extreme event, stolen. In the classrooms, The Northampton Academy uses black and white LaserJet printer and colour Inkjet printer. Inkjet printers spray magnetically charged ink through a fine nozzle onto each sheet of paper, where a LaserJet printer uses a laser beam. The black and white LaserJet printers are used on a more regular basis simply because it is a lot cheaper to run. It prints very quickly and makes them efficient in classes where a lot of pages needed to be printed out by each student. When colour prints are needed, although the colour printers are not used much due to the cost of them and because of the very slow speed they print at, colour Inkjet printers are used because they are a lot cheaper to buy than they would be if colour LaserJet printers were used. The Northampton Academy has Microsoft Office 2003 software installed throughout the school which is used by both students and members of the administration team. The different programs used are: MS Office 2003 MS Word Word Processing Used by the staff to produce letters which can then be sent home to parents. Used by the students for GCSE coursework when typing up essays or producing work in various subjects. Teachers can prepare worksheets to be handed to the students in their class. MS Excel Spreadsheet Used for calculating sums of money in the finance department, and keeping track of school budgets. Used by students for ICT GCSE coursework. MS PowerPoint Presentation Used to create slide show presentations by teachers of various subjects which can then be shown to students to provide them with help and information in specific areas of the subject. MS Access Database Used to store information on every student in the school on a pupil database. Used for mail merging. Used by students for ICT GCSE coursework. MS Publisher Desk Top Publishing Used to produce newsletters which can be sent to inform parents of upcoming events on a regular basis. Used by students for ICT GCSE coursework. MS Visio Diagram Creator e.g. Flow Charts Room Plans MS InfoPath Used to create forms for data capture Microsoft Office 2003 isnt the only software used throughout the school. SIMs is used to a high extent in the administration office. SIMs (Schools information management System) is a full database which: Allows for the producing of timetabling for both staff and students. Produces set lists Is used for pupil monitoring, which are carried out and sent home to parents every 6 weeks using OMR (Optical mark Recognition). Is used for registration. The register is taken and the sheets are read by the optical mark reader machine. The data is then transferred into the database and matched to individual students. From this absence lists can be produced and followed up. The machine can then perform calculations which show attendance percentages for each student. Allows examination entries to be recorded for each, individual student and also produces exam timetables for them. Manages the pupil databases. Each student has a UPN (Unique Personal Number) which they are recognized by. To keep track of the money coming in and out of the school, the department budgets and the whole school budget, the finance office staff use specialist financial software (a database) called Hebron. This manages all the finance information, except from one area due to the fact that Hebron doesnt contain an order tracking system, and so Excel is used for this. As well as the different programs used in various ways for doing various different things, Windows XP offers other software which can be used. File Management Internet Explorer Utilities Paint Notepad WordPad Calculator This allows for the Academy to be fully equipped and use every piece of software they need and will benefit from. ICT is used widely across the school. It is used to a large extent in the ICT department to enable students to learn and complete work using the software on the computers. Every ICT room has a projector to allow for presentations and slide-shows to project onto a screen for the whole class to see and make use of. Cross-curricular use of ICT across the school has become a much bigger thing, which now means that every teacher is receiving a personal laptop; the use of ICT is specified under the National Curriculum and GCSE/A Level specifications; and the school is making use of many mini-suites and classroom PCs and trolleys. Interactive whiteboards are used in various classrooms, and the use of these is becoming larger by the day. The school is able to run more efficiently from the administration side of things as well, thanks to the great use of ICT. Letters can be produced and sent to parents using mail merge with the information retrieved from the pupil information database. As there are 1300 students in the school, the use of standard letters and templates comes in very useful. Clear and accurate information is kept about each student which is easy to find and can be easily updated using the database rather than using a manual filing system, such as lots of paper files. Books for educational purposes can be ordered by using the electronically stored order forms and being filled in using formulae to prevent mathematical errors occurring. The finance office manages the flow of money coming in and out of the school at a much quicker and easier rate because of the use of ICT. They make use of spreadsheets and specialist software in which they type in formulas to avoid repetitive tasks of adding up, calculating the averages and percentages and totalling sums of money, especially in cases where the information has to be changed. To keep the school functioning and communicating effectively, teachers now have Ranger software which allows for them to take over a students workstation from anywhere in the school if they are on inappropriate websites. The teachers can also send or post work straight to the students monitor using this software, which can help students to improve their work and allows for the teachers to monitor each student at any time to observe whether they are working hard. In general, ICT is used massively throughout The Northampton Academy which means the school is benefiting greatly by every aspect of ICT. Already, by the year 2004, the use of ICT in schools is fantastic. And to think that ICT is expanding and improving every day, makes you wonder what the future could hold! Lings Music Ltd Lings Music Ltd is a small independent company situated in the Weston Favell Centre with just the one branch. There are only 7 members of staff who keep it up and running. One of these is the manager and the other 6 are just ordinary working staff. The company isnt tied to any other big music stores; it is just a single, independently run, small company. Lings Music Ltd specialises mainly in pop music, but offers other categories of music. Because this is such a small company, they are unable to afford the latest equipment or any other expensive ICT equipment, so this means they have a limited amount of access to ICT in general. Lings Music Ltd do make use of some ICT but what they do make use of is very small, simply because they dont have the money to buy exceptional ICT equipment, so they make use of the basic hardware and software. The Microsoft package Lings Music Ltd uses is Microsoft Office XP, although they do not make use of all the software provided. They word process the lists of CDs they have in stock; use Microsoft Word or Publisher to produce basic flyers, leaflets, faxes, memos, letters and newsletters which help to promote their small business and advertise a little further. Lings Music Ltd also makes use of Microsoft Excel to calculate the staff wages, tax and National Insurance which saves them having to calculate everything themselves, manually, and instead use the automatic calculations provided through Excel. This saves a lot of time considering the staff number is small. Outlook Express is installed to enable for them to send emails and receive emails, which they can use to promote their business and sales to previous customers. But the main use they make out of Outlook Express is to email their suppliers to place orders to keep their stock at the correct levels. Lings Music Ltd only has one stand alone PC which is used by the manager. This means that it is not networked and if they introduced another PC into their business they would find it very difficult to update, access or share any files through the system. The one computer they do use is a Dell Pentium III with an 800 x 600 14 TFT (Thin Film Transistor) screen equipped with an Inkjet printer. With this all the hardware is used and made use of. Lings Music Ltd has managed to stay up and running as a small independent business for a fair amount of time now, but if they were to ever make the company any bigger and try to promote more and make more sales, then they would experience a lot of problems when it came to networking, the amount of software they use and the amount of PCs they use in their business. The manager and the 6 members of staff who run Lings Music Ltd have managed to get by with the equipment they do use, but could find themselves experiencing problems in the future as ICT expands and improves and they cant afford the latest ICT equipment.

RIDDOR applies to my occupational area because machinery is constantly in use in the workshop, so there is always a risk of serious injury or death.If this ever happens, the incident must be reported to the employer and the HSE. ââ¬â Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA) The Health and Safety at Work Act is the main act that all workplaces conform to. It is t he duty of all employers to make sure the workplace is safe for all employees to work in with a low risk of injury or any other hazard. Different chemicals are used to clean surfaces that can contain harmful substances, so it is important to make sure the area is safe to use them and that the user is wearing the correct PPE/RPE.

Only Child Syndrome Essay
When most couples today are thinking about kids, they wonder how many they should have. Some people want big families and others would rather have smaller ones. Then there are others that have no clue. They may worry about ââ¬Ëthe only child syndromeâ⬠, there are some people that believe itââ¬â¢s true. The question is ââ¬Ëwhat is the only child syndrome? Itââ¬â¢s a myth that dates back all the way to the late 1800s. When G. Stanley Hall said being an only child was ââ¬Å"a disease all in itself.â⬠Susan Newman, a social psychologist at Rutgers University and the author of the book ââ¬Å"Parenting an Only Childâ⬠says the myth has been continued because, ââ¬Å"People articulate that only children are spoiled, theyââ¬â¢re aggressive, theyââ¬â¢re bossy, theyââ¬â¢re lonely, theyââ¬â¢re maladjusted and the list goes on and on and on.â⬠(Only-Child Syndrome or Advantage) But there is no science to prove that the stereotype is true. Newman has said, ââ¬Å"There has been hundreds and hundreds of research studies that show that only children are no different from their peers.â⬠(OCSA) Even though most parents fear that their child will have ââ¬Å"the only child syndromeâ⬠, there are many positive aspects of having an only child. Children are expensive. According to the department of Labor, for families that make roughly $60,000 a year, each child costs more than $250,000 by the time he or she reaches 18, and that doesnââ¬â¢t include the cost of college (Whatââ¬â¢s Better: One Child or Siblings?). Children cost their parents roughly $50,000 in just food by the time their 18. â⬠Twenty percent of the family population is one child,â⬠Susan Newman said. ââ¬Å"In the major metropolitan cities, like New York and Los Angeles, that number is thirty percent. People are having children later, which leaves less time for having the second child. Housing is expensive. The divorce rate hovers at fifty percent. Often both parents are working, and child care is a factor.â⬠(WB:OCS) By being in an only child family, the child can develop better verbal skills and excel in school because they have more time to read than children with siblings. They also tend to have high IQââ¬â¢s because their parents hold them to such high expectations and have more money to give them for schooling. Only children usually have good leadership benefits. They are both born first and last so they have both roles that they have to assume. Only children donââ¬â¢t usually take to groups often, but when they do they more that usually will dominate the group in leadership positions (Only Child Versus Multiple Siblings). As an only child they donââ¬â¢t have to worry about sibling rivalries. They donââ¬â¢t have to worry about competing for their parentââ¬â¢s affection. Sibling rivalries may become out of control when a younger, rebellious siblings compete for their parentââ¬â¢s affection. In some instances, sibling rivalries have become fatal when inheritances or other emotional affection come into play (OCVMS). Itââ¬â¢s no fun having a sibling that your parentââ¬â¢s think can do no wrong. The child always has to get compared to this sibling no matter what they do. It would put a strain on the relationship with the sibling and also the relationship with the parents. An only child wouldnââ¬â¢t have to deal with any of that. Only children can grow up to become more independent, that is if their parents havenââ¬â¢t spoiled them by tending to their each and every need (Advantages and Disadvantages of Being an Only Child). They wouldnââ¬â¢t have an older sibling to depend on to help them every step of the way so they would have to fend for themselves. There may be many advantages of being an only child but there are also some disadvantages. ââ¬Å"The Little Emperor Syndromeâ⬠is one that comes to mind. The Little Emperor Syndrome is an unintended consequence of Chinaââ¬â¢s one-child policy. The parent gives their love, attention, resources to the one child and the results are that the child becomes spoiled and behaves like a ââ¬Å"Little Emperorâ⬠. (ADBOC) The child gets used to having everything done for them by their parent so much so that when they live in the real world, they are faced with real problems they may not be able to cope with. They may also lack self-confidence, and may feel lost when they are outside of the shelter that their parent have made for them. This may not always be the case though. It can be overcome with good parenting. Another big disadvantage of being an only child may be the feeling of loneliness. They wouldnââ¬â¢t have any siblings to talk to and share memories with, or to play with on the weekends. When their parents are no longer around, not having someone to talk to or look up to for any kind of help or support can be a real problem for the child. Furthermore, when their parents are older and need to have someone to take care of them, the only child would have to have all of that responsibility on their shoulders and it could get very overwhelming (ADBOC). An only child could have a lot of pressure put on them by their parents. Like pressure to keep the family name going, or academic pressures. Also being an only child could mean having your parents watch you like a hawk, which may be quite suffocating and stressful. Having siblings could take some of that pressure off that one child and they could have a more of a stress free life. But again this may not be true in all cases. The only child may be able to handle stress easily or have no stress at all. Only children have to work twice as hard at making friends. They donââ¬â¢t have the opportunity of learning social skills by having other children in their household. So that means they have to learn all of their social skills in the real world with other children. An only child may be labeled as a ââ¬Å"spoiled bratâ⬠by others that are jealous of their success. They usually receive more negativity from the world than children who were raised with multiple siblings (OCVMS). They may also be labeled as ââ¬Å"lonersâ⬠because they are used to working on their own on solving problems. A ââ¬Å"lonerâ⬠isnââ¬â¢t usually taken well by society. Only children usually value their privacy and the luxuries of having their personal lives communicated only to trusted groups of individuals (OCVMS). On the other hand, having multiple siblings can have its advantages, too. Children with siblings learn to negotiate, dominate or submit to other people. They learn to interact with each other at home first rather than with other children. Siblings tend to learn from each otherââ¬â¢s mistakes. The first born usually take the role of the ââ¬Å"teacherâ⬠or the boss in the family. They can teach the younger siblings about the things they did wrong when they were younger and didnââ¬â¢t know themselves. People who must deal with multiple siblings learn to be better leaders. They are taught to cooperate negotiate and in some instances, compete at home (OCVMS). Most likely the oldest sibling is usually the natural born leader. When individuals have siblings they tend to learn early n what their strengths and weaknesses are and they can build their lives accordingly. Negotiating with multiple siblings is usually a big reason so individuals to learn fast what their strength and we aknesses are so they can use them. Like being an only child, having siblings has its disadvantages too. Having to fight for parent attention and financial support is a big one. Parents who often have to educate multiple kids and enroll them in social activities find themselves in financial strain (OCVMS). So if there is a big age difference between kids, one child may have completely different experience that the other siblings. The blame game is another disadvantage. Younger siblings are usually more rebellious and less successful. The older sibling is usually the one that takes the heat for the younger siblingââ¬â¢s proclivities or personality traits. Younger male siblings are more likely to become homosexual. In fact, there is a 20% chance that a younger male sibling will become gay (OCVMS). Jealousy is often directed toward the older and usually more successful sibling. The younger siblings may form a group to unseat the older sibling from their ââ¬Å"throne.â⬠Younger siblings may be jealous of the older siblingsââ¬â¢ money, knowledge, spouse, status, or the time that was spent with their parents before they were born. This happens especially when there is a significant age different between siblings. Many couples now days have to worry about many different things when they want to become parents. They worry about how many kids they want and financially strains of having children. I come from a family where I am the eldest of four younger siblings. Created with short-term goals in mind, nuclear technology has wrought human and environmental devastation as well as the political dilemmas we find ourselves in today. The production and use of nuclear technology are matters of not just national or regional, but international concern; our global population lives in a global ecosystem, the destruction of which affects us all. The race to develop nuclear technology was a secret effort spearheaded by the United States in order to decisively end World War II by means of weapons of mass destruction. This effort was characterized by the myopic views of society embroiled in a war of global dimensions. Therefore, the goal to win the war took precedence over the consequences of researching, developing, testing and finally firing these weapons upon population and military centers of the enemy. These weapons were developed without foresight, disregarding the consequences of even possessing the required knowledge and raw materials not to mention the actual fallout resulting from their use. The end justified the means; the short-term solution was technically successful, the weapons deployed as expected, the enemy was devastated and the world has never quite been the same. The Life and Death of O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) Famous short-story writer O. Henry was born William Sydney Porter on Sept. 11, 1862, in Greensboro, N.C. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a physician. His mother, Mrs. Algernon Sidney Porter (Mary Virginia Swaim), died from consumption when O. Henry was just three years old, so he was raised by his paternal grandmother and his aunt. Early Years and Education O. Henry attended the private elementary school of his aunt, Evelina Porter (Miss Lina), starting in 1867. He then went to Linsey Street High Schoolà in Greensboro, but heà left school at the age of 15 to work as a bookkeeper for his uncle at W. C. Porter and Company Drug Store. As a result,à O. Henry was largely self-taught. Beingà an avid reader helped. Marriage,à Career, and Scandal O. Henry worked a number of different jobs, including as a ranch hand in Texas, licensed pharmacist, draftsman, bank clerk, and columnist.à And in 1887, O. Henryà married Athol Estes, stepdaughter of Mr. P. G. Roach. His most notorious occupation was as a bank clerk for the First National Bank of Austin. He resigned from his job in 1894 after he was accused of embezzling funds. In 1896, he was arrested on charges of embezzlement. He posted bail, skipped town, and finally returned in 1897 when he learned that his wife was dying. Athol died on July 25, 1897, leaving him one daughter, Margaret Worth Porter (born in 1889). After O. Henry served his time in prison, he married Sarah Lindsey Coleman in Ashville, N.C. inà 1907. Sheà had been his childhood sweetheart. They separated the following year. The Gift of the Magi Short story The Gift of the Magi is one of O. Henrys most famous works. It was published in 1905 and chronicles a cash-strapped couple tasked with buying Christmas presents for each other. Below are some of the key quotes from the story.
