Introduction On Saturday 14th January 2017, I visited the Indian Caribbean Museum. The museum is situated at #10 Swami Avenue, Don Miguel, San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago. It is located nearby the temple in the sea at Waterloo. It is also stationed directly opposite the Waterloo Hindu Temple. The museum is a small flat building which consists of ancient artifacts. The museum s large collection has been acquired through field trips by managers of the institution. The collection of artifacts comprises of old items such as musical instruments, agricultural objects, cooking utensils, pieces of clothing, ancient photographs and historical books. These different artifacts are separated by glass cases and are properly labeled. Some artifacts†¦show more content†¦The museum is managed and owned by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha and other committee members. The director, Mr. Satnarayan Maharaj, Mr. Ramjit Maharaj, the chairman, the vice chairman Dr. Kumar Mahabir, the curator, Saisbhan Jokhan, the vice curator, Ann Marie Ramhit, and twelve other committee members are the managers of the museum. The last Saturday of each month the committee members get together for a meeting. At this meeting the curator would report to the committee. The committee makes decisions and decides on how to improve and develop the museum in the best way possible. Also on the first Wednesday of each month the curator reports to the executive of the Maha Sabha. The museums superior collections comprises of unique resources and artifacts of immigrants who settled in Trinidad and Tobago. It includes cooking utensils, historical and religious books, ancient photographs, musical instruments, agricultural objects, jewelry, clothing and forms of transportation (bicycle). Discussion of Selected Artifacts Three types of artifacts that interested me the most at the museum are the agricultural objects, the cooking utensils and clothing. The agriculture objects such as: cutlass, pick axe, axe grinding stone and grass knife (hassawa). The grinding stone also known as the Jata in hindi was used by each plantation. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano is a classical and well known slave Narrative. Olaudah Equiano who also goes by the name of Gustavus Vassa his given name was born in 1745 in a part of Africa that is now known as Nigeria. . Olaudah Equino’s narrative tells the story of his travels as a slave and then as a freeman through the Artic, North and Central America, the West Indies, Europe and Great Britain. This narrative was first published in 1789 and was written by him. When Equiano was eleven he was kidnapped along with his sister and sold to slave traders in the beautiful Island of Barbados. Equiano was of royal African blood and born to the chief Ibo of the Benin nation, but spent majority of his time with his mother. Equiano is the youngest son of seven children. Equiano uses his narrative to paint a descriptive eyewitness account of slavery in the American colonies and in the Caribbean during that time. Through his slave narrative he paints a clear descriptive picture of African culture, including customs of clothing, food and the respect paid to the dead as well as religious customs/ practices. He compares the inhabitants of Eboe or as we know it Nigeria to the early Jews. He also offers his theory that dark African skin is a result of exposure to the hot and tropical climates.
